THE PREZ SAYS

Hello ET Turners,

These hot dog days of summer has this old dog staying as close to the AC as possible. It’s certainly not the time of the year to be out harvesting turning wood, so stay cool and be safe..

It was good to see Steve LeGrue demonstrating for our club again.  He surely knows how to handle the skew and does a good job teaching his techniques.

I think everyone is looking forward to the August 9th demo with Paul Coppinger & Mike DeLong on “Miniature Hollow Vessels-KISS”.  This will feature Paul turning vessels and Mike making and explaining miniature tool use.  A follow up to this demo will be a “Shop Day” at Paul’s shop in Mineola August 23rd making and heat treating turning tools.

The Setup/Clean Up volunteers for August demo are:  Don & Pat Walworth, John Stroud, Jerry McQueen, Jack Day, Jose Alanis & Bobby Barron.  I will have a new sign up sheet to pass around for the rest of the year at Saturdays meeting that will include the December Christmas Party.

Keep a sharp tool and let the chips fly, – Charles

SWAT Tip

One of the SWAT lead demonstrators in October will be Mark St. Leger:

http://www.markstleger.com/

I attended one of Mark’s demonstrations at the AAW Symposium in 2006, and was very impressed with his turning ability and easy-going manner. Mark is a fulltime high school shop teacher and his demonstrations reflect both his knowledge of the subject and his expertise in communicating that knowledge. You can see this expertise first-hand by checking out his excellent video, “Skill Building Projects”, from the club library. Though the subjects of Mark’s SWAT demonstrations have not yet been published, I have no reservations in recommending you include Mark on your “must see” list for the 2008 SWAT Symposium. – Editor

SWAT 2008 Update

(excerpt from July 27, 2008 press release)

There is more news on this year’s SWATurners Symposium, scheduled for Waco, Texas, October 17 through 19.  By this time, everyone should have received this year’s brochure.  You may register at any time, either using the form in the brochure, a form you can download from the web site or electronically over the SWATurners web site at www.swaturners.org .

The regional demonstrators have now been named for this year’s symposium, thanks to the able work of Demonstrator Coordinator Craig Timmerman.  They are:

Kevin Bassett - Double Natural Edge Bowl

Delbert Dowdy - Segmented Box with Insert Lid

Wayne Furr - Projects for the Beginning Turner

Dan Henry - Rose Engine Lathe

Bill Kloepping - Advanced Design Laminations

Ken Rogers - Turning an Open-Sided Hollow Vessel

John Solberg & Pete Tkacs - Building a Vacuum Chuck System

Bill Tilson - Flower Petal Bowls and Vases

Allan Tucker - Better Shape and Form

Larry Walrath - Turning a Bowl from Raw Material to Finished Product

Larry Zarra - Turning Miniatures – Learning to turn fine details with confidence

Vendors are one of the biggest attractions at the Symposium every year.  It is a chance to actually see and try out all sorts of tools and buy them at a bit of a discount.  While the vendor list isn’t finalized yet, we expect the following vendors to be there for this year’s show:

The Cutting Edge

The Sanding Glove

Torne Lignum

Craft Supplies

Canyon Studios

Woodcraft

Turningwood.com

Vince’s WoodNWonders

Thompson Lathe Tools

Oneway Manufacturing

Robust Tools

Monk Lumber

Best Wood Tools

CPH International

Classic Wooden Belts

As with the demonstrator listings, the vendor list will be updated as we go along.  Be sure to support the vendors.  They support the Symposium by being there, even though it is not particularly profitable for them.

There will be an opportunity this year to see a number of different lathes in use in the demonstration runs.  In addition to the usual Powermatics, we are expecting Stubby, Robust and Oneway to make an appearance as well.  This is a great opportunity to check out your dream lathe.

July 2008 Meeting

Steve LeGrue talked about the “Friendly Skew” in July.

Steve discussed the various types of turning chisels…

…how to use them…

…and how to sharpen them..

He demonstrated a practical application – a table leg…

…and finished with some hands on instructions.

The club’s 2008-2009 Empty Bowls project got a big with 27 items donated. The total is now 29 items from 5 members.
